master craftsman Stephen C. Barlow
builds furniture with you, the customer, in mind. Steve is a
third generation New England woodworker who started Shaker Style
in 1989 in a small garage in Peterborough, NH. In 1990, he
purchased a farmhouse just a short drive off Route 101 in the
scenic Mount Monandnock region. His shop is located in this
historic 1850’s farmhouse at 292 Chesham Road. The old Livery
Stable has been beautifully transformed into a spacious woodshop
and a welcoming showroom. The Chesham R.R. Depot still stands
next door as a picturesque reminder of days gone by.

with the lines of the piece, form the foundations of my work. My
pieces start with a study of Shaker originals, then evolve into
furniture that is all my own. The body of their work and the way
it stemmed directly from the needs of their daily lives forms a
bottomless well of inspiration for my craft.”
the art of furniture making is a synthesis of functional,

is what customers have to say about Stephen’s work:

I was speechless. Every piece is perfect in every way & I can
tell the wood was hand selected piece by piece. Thank you so
very much for a truly positive experience. Stephen you are a
superior craftsman! I hope you continue to make furniture for

"I am enjoying my new
furniture very much. My husband was sitting in the porch swing
looking through the living room window and he said that it looks
so comfortable and beautiful that it just invites you to come in
and relax. My son, the future furniture maker, got down on the
floor and inspected every inch of it. He repeated that he was to
get any furniture that came from you when I die!"
"Now that four years have passed, we are even
happier! The cherry has seasoned nicely, and the furniture is
the focal point of our house. What's amazing to us is that the
swelling/shrinking of the wood has been minimal to nonexistent.
In the hutch, every single door and drawer opens and closes just
a smoothly and evenly as when you first crafted it for us."

"The sofa table is perfect—and beautiful. Your work
is so fine, the graining of the wood so well chosen, it is easy
to call you an artist as well as a craftsman - we both love your

"We were thrilled to receive our
Arch Panel Bed and Dresser. Beyond being two very useful &
needed pieces of furniture, they are beautiful pieces of art.
When we lived in Washington DC, we saw a sensational exhibit of
the finest in Shaker furniture at the Smithsonian. The pieces we
now own could easily have taken their place in the exhibit."
